| BASIC CULTURE INFORMATION FOR GROWING DAYLILIES LOCATION: Most daylilies will grow in various soils and climates, provided they don’t have to compete with trees and shrubs for water and nutrients. To achieve optimum growth and bloom, plant daylilies where they receive full sunlight for at least half of the day. WHEN TO PLANT: Daylilies can be planted during almost any time of the year. Be sure to plant at least four to six weeks prior to your first freeze. SOIL: Almost any garden soil is fine for growing daylilies. They thrive in a variety of soils from light sand to heavy clay. The better prepared the soil the greater the reward. To get any soil in good condition, spade or till the area at least 12 to18 inches deep and work in generous amounts of organic materials, such as well rotted cow manure, compost, or rotted leaves. Daylilies prefer a soil PH of 6.0 to 6.5, which is mildly acid. To determine your soil’s PH you can send a soil sample to your County Extension Service for a full soil analysis. This is a simple and very cost effective procedure. Call your Extension Office for details. Be sure to mark your sample "Daylilies- Perennials". FERTILIZER: Daylilies do much better when fertilized each year. A single application of 8-8-8 or 10-10-10 during the spring is usually sufficient. If you have had a soil test, this will give you proper soil analysis regarding fertilizers and other additions if needed. WATERING: Watering is essential for good performance. The amount of blooming and re- blooming depends directly on the moisture content of the soil during the growing season. Adequate moisture will promote good growth and flowering. Avoid watering during the hottest part of the day. One inch of water per week is ample. Deep watering once or twice per week is preferred. |
